Interstate 25 near Pueblo, Colorado was closed Sunday afternoon following a train carrying coal derailed, collapsing a bridge onto a trucker who was passing underneath.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the BNSP Railway train derailed on the bridge over Interstate 25 near mile markers 106 and 107 around 3:25 pm Sunday afternoon leaving 12 train cars toppled and coal spilled. According to CSP, the unidentified trucker was trapped in his vehicle for several hours until rescue crews were able to get to the driver. Police announced the driver had died just after 9 p.m.

Maj. Brian Lyons with the Colorado State Patrol said crews would be working through the night to figure out what happened.

“We will be diligent with our investigation to see what transpired and working on the state, local, and federal level to answer as many questions as we can,” Lyons said.

The NTSB has launched an investigation into the derailment.
